When you think of classic pastry, desserts that are just beautiful, you cannot beat delicious french tarts! These French tart recipes are pretty to look at, easy to make, and will please you and all of your guests.
I love a tart recipe! Growing up in Montreal aka French Canada, I was always tempted every time I walked by a bakery (and they are everywhere)! It inspired me to make my version of a tarte aux pommes which is my take on a French apple tart or a “tarte normande” as it is otherwise called. Tarts are often beautiful, easy to make, and in this post we are going to take about the equipment you need for some easy and delicious tart recipes, as well as look at some recipes.
🥣 Tools you need for tart recipes:
tart pan also known as a tart tin: You are going to need either one large tart pan or mini tart shell pans. All of them should come with a removable bottom.
rolling pin: This is to roll out your pastry for your pastry case (aka the pie crust)
plastic wrap: Often in my recipes, I do not place my pie dough in the fridge to cool down. However, if you want to make the pastry dough ahead of time and wait on using it, you would cover it in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
pie weights: It is important to pre-bake your crust so that your tart does not have a soggy bottom. Classic tarts have delicate but sturdy crusts.
parchment paper: Parchment paper is what you will top the crust with when you pre-bake it. You will then top the parchment paper with the pie weights.
food processor: I like to make my pastry dough in a food processor as I am gluten free and find it simpler.
pastry brush: Almost every classic French tart will be topped with apricot preserves or apricot jam. A tart glaze brings the whole look together.
📃 Ingredients or fillings you often see for or need:
Fresh fruit: this can be anything from apple slices, strawberries (if one were to make a strawberry tart or a strawberry galette), kiwi slices, really any fresh and juicy fruits.
Almond flour: A lot of my tart recipes use frangipane. Frangipane is an almond custard filling. It pairs beautifully with fruit.
Custard: If you are making a classic French fruit tart, you would likely use a vanilla pastry cream or a creamy vanilla custard as the filling.
Crème pâtissière: This is a pastry cream that often serves as a filling like custard.
Heavy Cream: You are going to want heavy cream for any custard base.
Apples: Apple pie may not be a classic French tart but apple frangipane tarts are, along with tarte normande are. In addition to recipes like tarte tatin.
Pastry: To make pastry you are obviously going to need flour and butter. It really depends what you want to do for your tart crust if you are making sweet or savory but you can make sweet pastry crust by adding sugar. The thing is that all tart crusts have in common is that they are a flaky crust. Some examples of tart crusts are a sweet shortcrust pastry, buttery shortbread crust, buttery crust, or puff pastry. As I am gluten free, I use a gluten free crust for all of my recipes.
