When I moved to Richmond, other than Josh, I did not know anyone. It was a scary feeling as I feel I had always had people that I could call upon who would be there. If it was to grab a coffee, go try a new restaurant, or just check in, someone was always accessible.
I slowly met people, my neighbors mostly. When I started teaching, I was yearning to build relationships with my teams. My first teaching situation did not prove to be successful in that but my second, oh man. I was part of what we called the 5th and 6th grade team. I had two of the best partners that anyone could work with, Julie & Becca.
Both of these women are strong, smart, and kind. They were my helping hands when I was in a rough spot with my health and was struggling to get by. One of the things that Becca had mentioned fairly early in my meeting her was that she loved photography. As I also loved photography, it was a fun discussion point.
I had not seen Becca since school let out last summer and she recently started teaching at a different school (where she is killing it). Since seeing her, she had created her own photography business. I knew that I was going to need to have photos of myself on this site and I wanted her to take those pictures. I am incredibly awkward when it comes to having my photograph taken. It is difficult for me to not be uncomfortable when I am the focus of the session. Becca is the friendliest and warmest person. She makes you feel so at ease that you forget she is photographing you.
One of my favorite television shows to have ever been made is Jane the Virgin. I plug it to everyone I encounter due to its wit and sincerity. One of the main characters, Rafael, is often the little voice in the head of the protagonist, Jane. A reoccurring phrase that he says to Jane is “Be brave”. This year, I feel I am taking steps towards being brave. Jumping into this has been a scary endeavor but an exciting one. Becca is being brave too, by starting her own photography business. Her friendship and skills behind the lens are such a wonderful gift.
I hope that you all have a wonderful rest of your week and that you too continue to be brave.
